Cyber Monday’s showing in 2010 hits an all-time sales record

In a time when people are hesitant about spending, US online retail sales hit an all-time high on Cyber Monday.

According to data from the research firm comScore, Cyber Monday sales surpassed $1 billion. This was the first time a single day of shopping online ever passed the billion-dollar point.

The total $1.028 billion in sales is up 16 percent from the same day last year.

Furthermore, it wasn’t just Cyber Monday that was popular with online shoppers. The entire Thanksgiving weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, experienced a lot of online sales, which totaled $2.97 billion.

These results from comScore are similar to those released by IBM Coremetrics and ChannelAdvisor, which boosts its credibility.

What these results mean to online businesses

These online retail stats show a spending growth that is moving quicker than traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

It may mean more consumer trust in buying online, which can greatly impact online businesses going forward.
